The opening credits

Season 1 opening credits. Ninety seconds that contain the whole show: Tony emerging from the Lincoln Tunnel, taking a ticket, and driving the Turnpike past Newark, the refineries, and the cemeteries out to a lawn in North Caldwell. The immigrant story compressed into a commute, scored to a British acid-house-blues track. Watch the side mirror — the World Trade Center appears here and was removed after 2001. — HBO Classics

Then & Now. The 1997 route retraced in 2021, shot for shot. A genuinely useful document of how much of the New Jersey in the titles is gone — including Satriale's, which was demolished. See Locations.

Trailers

Official HBO series trailer. How the show was sold: an Italian-American mob boss who confides in a psychiatrist. Worth watching for how squarely the marketing led with the premise — the therapy was the hook, not the crime. — HBO

Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos (2024). Alex Gibney's two-part HBO documentary — the best single making-of, with Chase on the record at length. Its own final moments cut to black, which tells you what kind of documentary it is. — HBO

The opening scene

The first therapy session. Tony in Melfi's waiting room, under the statue, and then the line the whole series is built on: that he came in at the end, and the best is over. Everything the show is about is stated in the first ten minutes and then demonstrated for eighty-six hours. See Themes. — HBO

Where to find more

Rather than embed dozens of clips that will break:

  • HBO and HBO Classics post and periodically refresh authorized clips.
  • The Blu-ray and streaming supplements carry commentaries and behind-the-scenes material that is not reliably on YouTube.
  • Talking Sopranos — Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa's episode-by-episode rewatch podcast, which contains more first-hand production detail than any other single source.
