Body Count

Every named death across the series, by season.

Approximate named-character totals. Counts vary by what you include — the point of the chart is the ratio, not the decimal.

The number that matters: Tony kills eight people personally, and the last one is his nephew. Compare Vito Corleone, whose whole mythology rests on distance from the act. Tony has no such distance and never acquires any, which is the show's most concrete argument that he is not the figure the genre trained you to expect.

The ones people miscount

Tony kills more than you remember, with his hands. Febby Petrulio (garrote), Matthew Bevilaqua, Chucky Signore, Ralph Cifaretto (beating), Tony Blundetto (shotgun), Christopher (suffocation). This is not a boss who delegates.

Livia dies off-screen of a stroke, in season three — a necessity after Nancy Marchand's death in June 2000, not a story decision.

Adriana's death is never shown completing. The camera stays outside the car and at a distance. Some viewers hold out for years on this; the show is not ambiguous about it.

Valery the Russian does not die. He walks into the woods in "Pine Barrens" (S3E37) and is never seen again. Chase eventually said Boy Scouts found him and his boss sent him back to Russia — and only said so, in his words, because so many people got pissy about it.

Tony's fate is not a death. It is an absence of information. See The Ending.
