A standing warning about this material

Godfather production history is unusually unreliable, and it's worth understanding why before you trust any anecdote about it.

The stories have been retold for fifty years by participants with strong incentives to improve them. Robert Evans and Coppola spent decades publicly disputing who saved the film. Albert S. Ruddy's account is the basis for a television series he executive-produced. Gianni Russo has claimed a great deal that nobody can corroborate. And the mob-adjacent stories in particular were always partly unverifiable and are now entirely so, because everyone who could confirm them is dead.

This wiki's practice: when a story is disputed, it says so and names who claims what. If you find a page stating a contested anecdote as fact, that's a bug — please open an issue.

The most reliable single account of the production is Mark Seal's Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli (2021), which is journalism rather than memoir. See Sources.
